Falls Church, VA.  BalletNova is launching a new Board Recruitment Campaign and is seeking to fill four board positions. We seek individuals with an interest in the arts, or improving their local community through the arts.


BalletNova is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing a center of dance excellence in Northern Virginia, nurturing and training dancers of all ages, and offering superb community performances

Purpose of the Board of Directors: To advise, govern, fundraise, oversee policy and direction, and assist with the leadership and general promotion of BalletNova Center for Dance to support the organization’s mission and needs.  This is a volunteer, unpaid position.


BalletNova’s Vision

Vision Statement

BalletNova Center for Dance offers rigorous ballet training for aspiring professionals in a nurturing environment, as well as quality instruction for children and adults at all levels. The not-for-profit Center provides creative opportunities for professional choreographers and teachers. We strive to create a learning atmosphere based on mutual support, respect and excellence. We build community and inspire public appreciation of dance as an art form through performance, education and outreach.


Board Responsibilities

  • Determine mission and purpose.

    • Create and review a statement of mission and purpose that articulates the organization’s goals, means, and primary constituents served.
  • Support and evaluate the Managing Directors (joint leadership of Artistic and Executive Directors).

    • Ensure that the chief executive has the moral and professional support s/he needs to further the goals of the organization; participate in annual review of Managing Directors
  • Ensure effective planning.

    • Actively participate in an overall strategic planning process and assist in implementing and monitoring the plan’s goals.
  • Monitor, and strengthen programs and services.

    • Determine which programs are consistent with the organization’s mission and monitor their effectiveness
  • Protect assets and provide proper financial oversight.

    • Ensure adequate financial resources for the organization to fulfill its mission and that proper financial controls are in place
  • Build a competent board.

    • All boards have a responsibility to articulate prerequisites for candidates, orient new members, and periodically and comprehensively evaluate their own performance.
  • Ensure legal and ethical integrity.

    • The board is ultimately responsible for adherence to legal standards and ethical norms.
  • Enhance the organization’s public standing.

    • Clearly articulate the organization’s mission, accomplishments, and goals to the public and garner support from the community.



  • Commitment to the mission of the organization

  • Attend and participate in meetings on a regular basis – currently Board meetings are from 7:00 – 9:00 PM on the second Wednesday evening of the month, and held every other month (September, November, January, March, May, June, often a retreat in July)

  • Attend all performances and as many special events as possible

  • Become familiar with finances, budget, and financial/resource needs.

  • Understand the policies and procedures as outlined in the Bylaws

  • Contribute or obtain financial support (through donor contacts and fundraising) of a minimum of $1,000 per year

  • Represent BalletNova at community meetings and events, as needed

  • Read monthly reports

  • Identify and recruit your successor

  • Exercise strategic thinking and participate in short and long term planning process for overall direction of the organization



  • Ability to: listen, analyze, think clearly and creatively, work well with people individually and in a group.

  • Be open to developing new skills such as: cultivating new donors and soliciting funds, reading and understanding financial statements, learning more about the substantive program area of the organization.

  • Possess: honesty, sensitivity to and tolerance of differing views, a friendly, responsive, and patient approach, community-building skills, personal integrity, a developed sense of values, and concern for BalletNova’s development

  • A sense of humor

  • Fundraising experience with a non-profit organization is very helpful

  • Past experience in and/or strong interest in strategic planning

  • Skills in reading and understanding financial statements is a plus



  • Opportunity to help make the community richer through cultural development and outreach

  • Develop personal leadership proficiency

  • Explore new skills not usually found in your primary profession (such as special events planning, volunteer management, financial oversight, communication, networking)

  • Get to know other community leaders
